Peter Arno

Curtis Arnoux Peters, Jr. (b. August 1, 1904; died February 22, 1968)

Born in New York City. Attended Yale University from 1922-24. Arno was a New Yorker cartoonist for forty-three years. He published his first cartoon there in June of 1925, just four months after the magazine's launch. His style is quite distinct, including his penchant for drawing well-endowed women.

Take a look at the photograph I posted. He was a handsome guy. Successful, too. Strange, then, how in the later years of his life he moved from his beloved New York City to upstate New York, utterly foresaking his family and becoming a recluse who rarely, if ever, left his home and who virtually never contacted his (former) friends. Simultaneously, he became a miser. He evidently died as a very unhappy individual, at least according to the piece Charles Saxon wrote in the 1979 retrospective. He's buried in Kensico Cemetery in Westchester (NY) County.

Arno produced at least one Broadway play ('Here Goes The Bride,' which ran from Nov. 3-7, 1931) and did scene and costume design and wrote music and lyrics in three others. His first publication ('Whoops Dearie!', a novel) is god-awful and pretty much unreadable, but each of his subsequent volumes of cartoons is excellent. (A note to collectors: the dust jacket for 'Favorites' is exceedingly scarce.)
