Mega-rare Bird Alert!

This Broad-billed Hummingbird showed up at a woman’s hummingbird feeder in Derby, NY and is WAY out of its range. Normally found in the far southeastern corner of Arizona and most of Mexico in summer, how it ended up on the eastern shore of Lake Erie is amazing. The bird was banded shortly before we arrived and is thought to be a female. Thankfully it reappeared a few times after the banding. There was even a group of birders from the Bronx who drove in early this morning—about a 7 1/2 hour trip!

That got the birdos excited, and got you an excellent photo.

WOW!!! I saw the thumb and thought "that's a bizarre looking rubythroated", and of course it is a mega rarity as you said. I wonder if storms have blown it this far north. I hope it survives. I think I read once about another species far out of range that was caught and transported by air to its southern home. It is not the best place for this southerner. What an amazing shot! VV

Super find and image of this wayward Hummer Carl. What we won't do for a rare visitor.

cool capture...in colouring it reminds of a female Anna's Hummingbird, often seen here on the west coast..
