A Tale of Two Kitties

Luigi is not very happy with Albus, or having his temperature taken! All of our cats are indoors only. Albus is a master escape artist. Because I went out the sliding door and didn’t come back in the same way, Albus took advantage of the unlatched screen and pushed it open to go out for “lunch.” Unfortunately, Luigi followed. About 15 minutes had passed when I noticed the door was open about 4". I saw both cats outside by some day lilies, which are highly toxic to cats. Supposedly even just licking the pollen off of their fur can cause renal failure within 72 hours. This is not the first time Albus has done this and he was fine. But on the side of caution, and because I really had an extra almost $700 burning a hole in my pocket, we took both cats to the emergency vet for an exam and a couple of shots—one for fluid and the other for anti-nausea. We did find two barfs and know that one happened within 15 minutes after ingesting the leaves. We also counted the leaves and matched them up with the number missing on the plant. Hopefully they’ll both be fine.

That is scary! I’m glad they are well.

What a scary story!!! Lilies (of several varieties) are very highly toxic to both dogs and cats. That's why I decided not to replace our lilies that died over last Winter. I worry about lily pollen even when we have cut bouquets from the florist. Although I've read mixed opinions as to the exact level of danger of daylilies to dogs, daylilies are known to be especially toxic to cats. Just like Asiatic and Easter lilies can be deadly to both cats & dogs.

I can see why you made an instant trip to the vet's office when you found a chewed leaf. Getting your kitties immediate treatment for what they ate (or might have eaten) was well worth the $700. Fur family members are priceless. Hopefully, they are feeling okay today.

Yikes, I had no idea that day lilies were so toxic. I'm glad both boys are fine and I hope they continue so. Cats are so adept at slipping out of doors! Ours are indoor cats too but occasionally one manages the great escape. V

What a story. Our neighbors' cats come to our garden daily. We have many daylilies but never knew they could be a danger to cats. Thankfully the cats ignore the flowers and seem OK. Hope Luigi and Albus are fine too. Love the photos. v

What an expensive drama! Cats will be cats - always the escape artists ready to sample plants.
