Mating Promethea Silkmoths
(Male left/Female right)
While out working on spreading mulch and cleaning up the flower beds this afternoon, I noticed what I thought was a black butterfly.
At first I thought it was a Mourning Cloak, but it seemed small. My wife thought Black Swallowtail, but it didn't have tails and it was
very erratic. While trying to get a better look at it as it flew in and out of our Washington hawthorn, I noticed this mating pair.
The black "butterfly" was actually another male Promethea trying to get in on the action.
Getting a shot was a challenge. I had to get a ladder and then carefully climb between the thorns. This was the best I could do.
