Victor, that did make perfect sense! I understand your dilemma however, let's take this to it's logical conclusion. If part of the impact of a photograph is based partly on the skill of the photographer and partly on the skill of the original artist when shooting art that someone else has made and you want to only have photos made entirely by the photographer then you would have to rule out interesting architecture, bridges, clothing design, Ikea vases, etc. These are all things that were designed by someone else and that we, as photographers, tend to shoot quite a lot of. Looking at it that way we are limiting ourselves severely by not shooting things designed by someone else. ~Sharon

Sharon, I did actually google the sculpture before posting, so I saw several other views of it. That doesn't change my dilemma. Please note that my comment wasn't made to be a criticism of your entry. It was an expression of frustration in how to properly judge the image (at voting time). Some of the impact of the final image comes from the photography, which includes post processing. Some of it also comes from the skill of the original artist. I don't think it would be fair for the photographer to get a boost by riding on the shoulders of a sculpture genius. On the other hand, I don't think it's fair to penalize the photographer just because the subject is someone else's art. That's what makes it difficult to judge. There's an extra element that needs to be weighed. I hope that made some kind of sense.

Thanks for your comments everyone! I have been without an internet connection since I posted these so apologize for my delayed response. Mary Anne, yes, they are outside and, no, I didn't zip in the sky. This was the sky the day I was there. The whole image does have a lot of dodging and burning (and a lot of cloning out of sensor dust!). Victor, I understand your problem with shooting other people's art which is why I gave so much information on the sculptures. However, I feel that when I shoot a piece of art I am making yet another piece of art, especially as my image is using it as part of a composition. I am not, in any of these three images, documenting a piece of art, you are only seeing a portion of the artwork in my composition. It, in effect, becomes yet another piece. If you go check out what these sculptures look like in real life I think you will see my point.http://michaelsomoroff.com/wp/nggallery/page-88/page-4/
I would be interested to hear your further thoughts on this. ~Sharon

I like this, but as usual for me with the subject is another's art, I'm unsure how to weigh it in comparison to the others. I guess I won't worry about it until voting time.

Sharon, I have a question about the series you've presented here. Because the sculptures are all rather large, I'm wondering if they're outdoor installations. Also, did you PS in the sky? All three are very striking images.

You have the ability to make a simple 'abstract' interesting without using 'bells and whistles'... just lighting and composition. Terrific Sharon
