I really like the intrigue of these old (aged) mechanical devices. This one certainly demonstrates its agedness judging by the layers of paint applied to it.
For me it also tells several stories such as the fastening system used in bygone days.... 'rivets'. I imagine the workers slamming the semi-molten rivets with their hammers and 'forming collars' or 'dies' ( or what ever they are called??)
The forging... drop hammer or hand 'blacksmithed' levers and stuff... ! I had better stop before I fall into a trance! ... lol
