The shutter was open for four seconds but there was light there for only a tiny fraction of that time.

Thanks Mikey. I used a micro switch that was actuated by the hammer handle (out of the frame)to fire the flash. The hammer was on a hinge so it was easy to precisely time the flash. Here is another where the hammers only was about 1/16" into the bulb. http://www.pbase.com/image/41711186 Jim

Very cool shot, Jim. My question is not what was the four seconds for, but how did you time the strobe with the hammer striking the bulb? Nicely done. Cheers, -mikey
