Thanks, guys, for the comments/explanation. Usually when I see such road marking here where I live, it indicates that has been a traffic accident and the police were marking the positions, directions, etc of the involved vehicles. I am relieved to hear the origins here are more benign! :-) Regards Nico

The markings are surveyors marks in preparation for some utility street work or construction. I'm enjoying them as a component in the color composition with scattered reds in particular. -tv

Many of the city streets in NY are marked up like this - probably for construction purposes. I actually tried incorporating some of these patterns into a photo for the ground challenge but never came up with anything. This time I think they add interest. Penny Street
