hey, I think I will go down the sound activator route when I've got time to build it but thanks for the info. Didn't ealise it was an arrow but I can see it now!

The flash I'm using is an old National/Pana PE-287S. It doesn't seem to have a pre flash and when set to Auto low ISO and say F1.8, it seems to strobe pretty fast. Hope it works. Like your other shots too.

Fantastic! I do think a modern speedlight might be too slow for this. It's hard to beat the old auto-thyristor flashes for getting a very short pulse. I've examined the output pulses from my 580 EX and it never does generate any extremely short pulses. Instead, it tends to move to a PWM mode (almost as if it was in high speed synch mode) to create the lower power outputs. So to get one very short pulse, I do think we are stuck with using old flash units. This is really great. It's hard to imagine better timing :) Jim H.

For this shot I did use a 40 year old strobe/flash. I don't believe a sound trigger would work on a shot like this. There is no loud noise. For the flash timing I used a switch that was actuated with a string that was tied on to the arrow. I could move the switch back and forth to get the timing where I wanted.

nice work. I was reading yesterday about building a sound activated flash or strobe. Any pointers would be useful. Did you use a speedlight or was it too slow? Was the trigger a DIY job? If so, built from scratch or modified speaker etc? Any help appreciated!!
