Kelly - Funny you should say "in the dark" about infrared, cuz we all are ";^) i.e. our eyes just don't see it. Anyway, this is a modified D30 cam. The shutter speed tells all. With a filter; you can't see thru the viewfinder and the SS for this pic would have to be 12s-15s. I had LifePixel.com do the work. Digital sensors are inherently capable of viewing infrared light, so the manufacturers put filters over the sensor to exclude all but visible light. These are removed to modify the cam so metering and AF will function more-or-less 'normally'
Nico & Kelly - Because infrared isn't visible light flare acts differently with the lens. I'm not sure exactly how this works, but it doesn't always, ha! Lenses with the latest and greatest color coatings often won't work with infrared cams. Anyway, that explains the 'moonish' look to this shot.
Techo - Thanks for the suggestions. I noticed that spot just after I posted this pic to the Gallery. I'll get after it ASAP.
Nice one, Michael... at first glance I thought this tree was backlit by the moon! :-) This is something I have never tried, but you inspire me to look deeper into IR work.
Infrared shot are always a treat to view and this is no exception. Woud perhaps clone out the hint of something black near the bottom edge of the frame and applye selective noise reduction, to the background only.
