Love it. I see the boundary to the mat almost all the way on my "reality check" monitor (a laptop screen, actually) but it looks intensely good there too and the black is absolute. I would have guessed opaque glass.

Thanks, everyone, for the comments. The container turned out to be much denser than I expected. It's a plastic container I got at Target for this purpose. The size and shape were just what I wanted, but I was afraid it wasn't going to be dark enough. Well, it certainly doesn't suffer from that problem. The container was sitting on a black rubber mat, which turned out to be much brighter than the container. Had I left its brightness alone, the container would have been easy to distinguish from the surface, but then the surface would have proved to be too distracting. On my monitor, the boundary is evident on the left side but not on the right. If you can't clearly see the boundary on the left, you're not seeing the picture as I intended. -- Victor

This is a great "food image" / product shot, Victor. Great lighting, detail, although the pot it'self is hard to discern from the tabletop, the eye is still drawn to all the lighting and detail. Nice work. Markjay

All the good things everybody else has said I'll say again. Nice.

They taste very good. But they stain quite strongly and have large seeds. Their staining ability, even the green ones, is similar to unripe black walnuts (ever tried peeling one?). I read a website that cattle in drought conditions that gorge themselves on these fruit get diarrhea, and lose weight. This is supposedly evidence that the fruit is toxic. When my plant gets big enough, I intend to make jam and/or wine out of the fruit. I think black wine would be very intriguing. -- Victor

Jim H2- But excellent guess?? It took me 6 tries!

I had no idea there were persimmons of this color. How do they taste?
Canon DSLR Challenge15-Aug-2007 22:00
Bingo! Who can we credit for that excellent guess? -- Victor
Canon DSLR Challenge15-Aug-2007 21:11
Diospyros Texana aka Texas Persimmon or Mexican Persimmon
Canon DSLR Challenge15-Aug-2007 19:09
Nope. still wrong family -- and remember, they're cherry tomato size. More hints: the plant family is the ebony family. Mexicans used to use this fruit to make black dye. It's a native to this part of America. -- Victor

Jaboticaba??
Canon DSLR Challenge15-Aug-2007 12:36
Mangosteen?
Canon DSLR Challenge14-Aug-2007 23:38
What they are remains a secret, lest my dad, who's trying to guess what they are reads what they are instead. He guessed Belladonna, which is incorrect. It's not even the right plant family. I gave a hint that they are the size of cherry tomatoes. -- Victor

Of course its a beautiful shot, but what are they- figs?

Thank you very much! Main flash on the camera was a cheap Vivitar. I use the Vivitar because it doesn't send a preflash like the popup flash does, hence can be used to drive my broken Sigma flash as a slave. It has a sheet of paper loosely taped over it to diffuse the light. Secondary flash, whose hotshoe mount was broken at a karate tournament, was held on the right side with a sheet of paper held about half way between the subject and the flash. Two more sheets of paper are on the left side. Some of the light from the flash bypasses the right sheet of paper and shines directly on the left piece of paper.

Something like that, anyway. I varied the placements with each shot in the series and took the one I liked the best (the first). -- Victor

Excellently lit, Victor. Natural light, or did you use any special "gear"? I am just being curious. You accentuated the shapes and textures really well and avoided overdoing the highlights. Super. Regards jnconradie
