There's a reason for the insects. I recently started a project to document all forms of life in my yard (not counting those forms introduced by me or previous residents). The start of the gallery is located here:http://www.pbase.com/victorengel/yard_life

I don't recall seeing the blue on the wingtips, but I didn't add the color either. I think it's the result of camera angle with the blue sky in the background, combined with diffraction and chromatic aberration and purple fringing. If you look along the edges of the cable, for example, you can see more deep blue. I suppressed it next to the cable and the dragonfly's head and thorax, but not around the wings. -- Victor

It looks like insects are your thing this challenge victor. Beautiful natural colours. Are the wings here really that fabulous royal blue or is it an effect of the light. Either way it was compelled to be shot. Regards, Najinsky.

I really wasn't that close (note that I was using a 300mm lens). However, the settings on my camera were set for something else, I quickly snapped the picture before I had a chance to switch to better settings. It is possible to get very close to these creatures:http://www.pbase.com/victorengel/image/82291002 . -- Victor

Fantastic Victor, love the vivid colours. You did well to get this close to these Formula 1 creatures. Nice capture.

I am wondering if it is the diffraction effect that we are seeing here which starts to be significant at around F11 on a 20D and perhaps the 10D as well? (see link here:http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/diffraction-photography.htm )?

It's only because I care, Victor, only because I care.

I was up today at 7, out by 8, home at 12:30....Out again at 2, home at around 5:30 out at 7pm, home now and finally I can get some real work done (I'll probably type till midnight or 1am, unless I just collapse)...though I did pretty fabulously today actually. I wrote a short story about it already and posted it.

But when I'm home, yes, I'm always on line.

Unless I'm reading 14th Century French History...lol

Best Wishes, Traveller

Traveller, you seem to frequently be the first person to post. Either you're following me around, or you're always online or something. On the color, it is a bit exaggerated using an overlay layer and a curves layer. But those layers just accentuate whatever is already there. The dragonfly (Neon Skimmer) in question has a red body with red/rusty spots on mostly transparent wings with black veination. How the wingtips got so blue is a bit of a mystery to me, but I suspect it's a combination of purple fringing, reflection of the sky, and maybe even diffraction and interference (like with butterfly scales) or even chromatic aberration. Anyway, it's not fake, and I'm not complaining. -- Victor

Geeze, Victor, the color in those wings are just gorgeous! Nice with the red border also.
