It is the inside of what is left of some sort of rubber ball. I found it discarded outside somewhere and picked it up thinking it would be good for just this kind of challenge. The light area in the middle is probably where water puddled but I don't know what the black is. Perhaps some sort of adhesive to hold the two halves together and it got squeezed inside?
