Oh!! K2, Sorry, Thanks for the solution.... I have been busy, logining in and out once in a while. I did not come back here to see the development... Any way "ethereal" was the clue for me... Nice work Peter, and welcome! and hope to see some of your work soon :) -Cat

Thanks Kiki_2. Posted a full image in the Pending Gallery.
The view above is a top view of a "stopwatch" style chronograph used in scientific research circa 1970. The image was cropped so that the reset button on the top appeared as a "spaceship". FWIW, the start/stop switch is located on the right hand side of the case, and the entire chronograph is about 10" in diameter.

Thanks for all the guesss and comments!! This first challenge (for me) has been a great experience. Very creatively inspiring. Absolutley astonishing and beautiful work has been generated. Thanks to Cat and everyone involved!

I'll be back; in fact, I might post again over the weekend, if I haven't already ;_)

PeterK: You can upload the full shot in the Pending gallery and just refer to it, for sake of ease.
As for guessing.... Cat - where are you?? I think it's a watch/clock/timepiece of some kind? You wouldn't pull the knob, because the handles would fall off or detach from the mechanism inside.

As soon as I figure out how to embedd a small image in a comment, I'll post a full view of it - unless someone still wants to guess. - PeterK

I think everyone have guessed it now lol.. those were a lot of clues. I'll give Cat the honors of typing it out.

Closer and closer Cat... It is an instrument to measure - but not blood pressure: something more immediate and ethereal. No I'm not a doctor, but my mother, who was a doctor of psychology, used this in her research lab to measure things all the time. Many people have used a smaller version that can fit in a pocket.
Canon DSLR Challenge28-Mar-2007 15:59
Manual blood pressure measuring instrument! It has all the following properties you mentioned:
Has a metal box with this kind of texture and a knob.
has just one tool in it.
You use it all the time, but never take it out of the box. (Are you a Doctor?)
You never pull on the knob because that will break the mercury/Alc reservoir & tube...

Very interesting clue you gave there, PeterK! I'll have to ponder on that one a bit... and then Victor will in any event get the answer first. :-) Only kidding... and meant as compliment, Victor. You impress me so much with you wide knowledge. Regards jnconradie

Cat is getting close. Although there is a single "tool" inside, I never take it out. While I use it all the time, I rarely pick it up. And, of course, I would never pull on the knob! - PeterK

Oh, just to be clear, I don't either. But I don't think toolbox. Breadbox more likely. -- Victor

Hello PeterK! Welcome to the challenges. I hope you are having fun here!! -Cat.
Victor, yes it does, but I don't think it is cloud, it might be tool box or any other box of some kind. The knob does not have a clean finish or texture. -Cat

I think the background looks a bit like stratus clouds. -- Victor

It is a knob, but on an unusual object. I debated whether I should crop out the center, but decided that would not be fair. Thanks for the comments. I added a touch of levels as suggested by kiki_2. - PeterK; first posting in the CSLR challenge series.

I am with Victor, partially... the surface is looking like paint on metal, like a filing cabinet or something. But I too think its a knob! Well seen and captured. -Cat

Ah, I think I have it now. It's the knob for a kitchen cabinet door. -- Victor

Well if I guess "a quarter", I'm at least partly right! Nice limited DOF and simplistic composition. A wee bit on the grey side here, perhaps levels could be tightened a little on the dark without loosing details in the nice little shadow. The title makes me wonder what it's really landing on.. looks like a miniture "sea surface"..
