Olaf, thank you for your amusing thoughts and analysis. It's a preserve jar that lost a bit of it's rim. I found it empty and unused and lonely in the cupboard. The close crop does makes the hardware a bit too imposing, still they may have over-engineered it. Here's a different view. Thank you for your comments. ~kt

First thought: uh-oh the cookie monster strikes again! Second thought: either that jar is too little or the closing mechanism extremely heavy-duty...
