Experimenting with intentionally blown highlights and harsh shadows. I'm also getting keener on this "sqare" thing that Mr. Hamilton planted in my head.

I like the mood Jason. Nicely done. If it were my autoportrait I'd get some hat and rain coat and play detective (it is almost halloween, the neighboors won't mind). That would fit the mood. Matt.

CS - It's just a desat, taking out most of the reds and yellows. I'm quite ruddy, and wanted myself mostly in black and white so that I didn't blend in with the brickwork too much. As for Maggie's patience, I'd earned some brownie points the night before for picking up "Take the Lead", the Antionio Banderas dancing movie. I then proceeded to spend those points on a good 25 minutes standing outside in 40°F while I played with light a bit.

It works for me. I like the square framing and the diagonal line it creates. I also like the color treatment in the photo. Is it duo toned or just really desaturated? Great thing to have a patient wife who is willing to humor you.

So, I have a confession to make: I didn't set this up on a tripod and trip the remote myself. My wife patiently let me line her up, get the metering how I wanted it, and then we switched places. About 30 iterations later I think I got close enough to what I wanted. If this violates the rules as a "self" portrait, let me know and I'll banish myself to pending. This is an idea I've had for awhile from a magazine (?) shot of Steve Buscemi (Mr. Pink in Resivoir Dogs). He had his face upturned into a low streetlamp, about 2 feet from his face. The harsh shadows and blown highlights actually improved his angular and gawky look, and I had hoped this would do the same for me. Incidentally, if anyone can find that online I'd love to see it again.
