3D Illusion (*)

You need ***red/cyan or red/green glasses*** in order to view this image correctly.

This is an anaglyph, a special kind of a stereo photo. When viewed with the naked eye, it looks as if a cheap lens with a lot of chromatic aberration would have been used.

An anaglyph is a combination of two separate shots, taken at a horizontal distance of about 6 cm. The red channel of the one and the cyan channel of the other shot are combined for the resulting image. If you would look at this image with the right colored glasses you certainly would consider it an example for an illusion; I am afraid that not everybody may have this kind of glasses handy right now. See Jason's comment below for a workaround.

A stereo pair version can be found here:

(No glasses needed, but you will have to be able to squint.)

Oops! Victor, please excuse me for addressing you as Vikas. Seems that those little grey cells of mine were a bit tired last weekend ;-) Gerald

For some reason, I didn't even notice the overhead lines as power supply for the trains until I viewed the stereo image as the cross-eye stereo pair on the link you prived. Thanks for posting it. This one would have been a good one for the perspective challenge. -- Victor

Vikas, "experimental" was not quite the right word; what I meant to say was that this is a fringe area of photography. Unfortunately, I am not able to view stereo pairs correctly, neither those for cross-eyed view nor for parallel view.
If you would like to take a look at the same image as a stereo pair, you can find it here (no idea wether it works at all):

How experimental is it? Anaglyphs have been around for a long time. I personally prefer stereo pairs, because I can view them without equipment, both the cross-eyed arrangement and the splayed-eye arrangment if the pair are not too wide. I tried viewing this one with no equipment, but it was difficult because of the color difference. I changed it to greyscale, but the difference in color made the two images different enough without further tweaking to see easily. Still possible, but difficult.

Lonnit, I'd like to know more information about those eye excercises. I've heard about it but know precious little about it. My brother does them with his son, but he hasn't given any details of the technique. What all sorts of excercises to you do? -- Victor

Nothing about Lonnit should surprise you by now! LOL! ;) I have them b/c I do an eye training program to keep out of glasses. ~ Lonnit

What a surprise! Lonnit has red/blue glasses! I did not expect any comments at all on this image because anaglyphs really are a very experimental area of photography, outside general interest. I could not resist to post it, as the present topic "illusion" may be the only opportunity to submit it.
Jason, splendid idea to use color filters instead of glasses! Cindy, this tip may help you and all other people who don't have colored glasses. The exact colors are not too critical in order to see the 3D effect; everything from red/green to red/blue will work more or less perfect. Colors are only critical if you want to get rid of colored bordersand flicker effects. Yes, the distance should be equal to the eye distance for best viewing convenience (it is by far too big here).

Don't have the glasses, but I dug out my B&W film kit and grabbed by Tiffen #25 red filter and my #11 green. Awesome effect. Is 6cm about the average distance between people's pupils?

Didn't work too well with the blue glass on my left - turned the glasses backwards and man, was that deep! LOL! Good job. ~ Lonnit

Oh I wish I could look at it through the glasses! This is amazing - I wish I could see it how it was meant to be seen :( Cindy
