The rainbow colors come from ice crystals. When they're aligned just right, they polarize the light. To get a much more vivid view of the colors, view with polarized sunglasses or with a polarizer on your lens. It's usually only visible in high, thin cirrus clouds. -- Victor

Reminds me of Jonathon Livingston Seagull. I like the 'stray light' under the wing - adds to the spirituality of this. I have seen that same rainbow ring when shooting an object into the sun -http://www.pbase.com/cindyd/image/39424810 Maybe somebody can explain it scientifically for us. Cindy
