Victor sometimes low key describes the background, as in a low key portrait. A more correct term for that type of photo would be 'a portrait with a low key background'. A low key photo I guess should be dark overall, but usually there are some bright tones in such a photo as well. At what point does it flip? I don't know... That's why I started looking at the histograms. I do believe looking at the median (instead of the mean) is the correct thing to do - and there seemed to be some kind of correlation between the median and whether I felt a shot was low key or not. Looking at the low key pool at flckr (link in challenge announcement thread) shows that the interpretation of low key varies greatly from photographer to photographer.
