Sutter Buttes and the Coast Range *

On a beautifully clear evening I was able to get this picture from my backyard. The far range is the Coast Range in California, north of San Francisco, which is over 100 miles away and the smaller mountains in front of the Coast Range are the Sutter Buttes in the Central Valley which are about 60 miles away. The closest hills are the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

CJ, I'll respect your judgment on this, but I think that I personally preferred the first version. Just me, a humble opinion. Best Wishes, Traveller

I tried differet crops and although the horizon ends up in the middle, because the dark Sierras are a little more dominant and in the lower third of the picture, I thought this looked the best. CJ

Well observed shot, very evocative, might benefit from some of the advice given by others here: there's not enough texture in the sky to sustain that much of it so it'd be bettter to crop this into a more pano aspect ratio. Tim

It's a very nice shot indeed, but I'd place the 'horizon' further up. If the foreground didn't cooperate, and that is the reason you have your horizon in the middle, I'd crop the top two thirds of the sky off in this shot.

Thanks Sharon and Cindy! I feel fortunate to have this view from my backyard. It is one of my favorite landscape scenes and I have a LOT of pictures of this view LOL. It's even more beautiful when the sun moves a little further North and I can get some great sunsets too. I'm looking forward to getting some more pictures of it now that I have the XT to capture it rather than my little 3.2MP Fuji! CJ

CJ, this is lovely! And, a perfect example of atmospheric perspective. Well done! ~Sharon

I've seen the coast ranges, the buttes, and the sierras many times - but never layered together like this image. For those who have not seen them the buttes are in the middle of the Sacramento River Valley . . . There is considerable distance between them and the mountains to either side. This is a cool shot. Thanks CJ! Cindy
