Hoverfly*

No, the former title "Sand Wasp" was wrong. Of course, Victor is right, it is a hoverfly (after doing some research on several insect sites, I think it is a very common species, syrphus ribesii). You can tell that it is a male because the eyes stand close together whereas the eyes of female hoverflies are separated by the forehead.

I think Victor is actually a 26-volume set of encyclopedias masquerading as a human and a photog. I think he would clean house on Jeopardy. Anyhow, between this and the green grasshopper shot, I've gotten my first lens itch in almost a year. There is a 100mm+ macro lens in my future. Great detail from a part of the world we often don't stop to see. Nice. --Mr. Biscuit

Shame on me, I wonder why I claimed this insect to be a sand wasp; I think I have never seen a sand wasp but thousands of hoverflies. Thanks for pointing out the error.
Lonnit, the flower with the hairy petals is a zucchini (or courgette) flower.

Gerald, Judging mainly by the shape of the eyes and the antennae, I would say this is no wasp but a hoverfly. -- Victor
