I like this a lot - there's great interest to find in the subtle variations in each coil. Nice take on the challenge.

One more point. This is perhaps an afterthought, but Newton's 7 colors in the rainbow are continuous and not discrete. Thus 6 is better for this photo than 7 based on rainbow. And 6 is less than 7 (considering minimal approach) :) -Cat

I knew there was an answer for 6 !!!!! But I wanted that to come from you, for I was not sure of your background. I understand now. Six it is. I didn't want to bring religion in the discussion. Can you use photoshop to bring indigo to life? That would help. Some photoshop experts here might have a solution. :) -Cat

Hmmm. I'll have to think about that. I thought of 7 coils, but then the aspect ratio was too long. Besides, the colors of the rainbow are only ROYGBIV because Isaac Newton thought there should be seven colors, not because there really are. Ironically, indigo, his seventh color, is the color I was aiming for when shopping for a background for my yolk. I also thought of reducing this to just 5 coils. By the way, how many days did it take God to create the world? Six. -- Victor

Victor, After seeing your work in Prime yoke, I am revisiting this to read this "photo" again. I would have prefered one more coil. There are only 6 (where as the week has 7 days) You got the nights correct! -Cat

In response to the thread on dpreview asking us to explain our thinking in designing our pictures, here is mine:

The subject is the same as in my previous picture. This time, I wanted to reduce colors to a minimum. This is actually a combination of two layers. One layer renders the yellow reflections at the top. The other renders the ones at the bottom. In the unretouched photo, the two reflections are different intensities. So in this case, post processing was used to reduce colors. Additionally, although the depth of field of the original was shallow enough that the far side of the spring was so blurred that it could not readily be discerned from the background, the transition from foreground to background was visible and needlessly complicated the shape (turning the gentle esses into hooks). I therefor merged another layer with contrast and lightness adjusted strong enough to simplify the shape to one I was satisfied with. Finally, I painted the white background black. I could have simplified the shapes even further, but that would be stretching photography into graphic design more than I was willing to stretch. This image took a lot of work to simplify down to this level. If I had it to do over again, I'd do it differently but probably wind up with something very similar. Oh, probably most importantly, my main goal was to reduce the photo as much as possible to my abstract view of the spring: a repeating gentle curve. -- Victor
