You're spot on. The monument is ringed by low pillars about 3' high and strung between them is heavy chain with heavy spikes at regular intervals. It is also ringed by trees that provided the softer shadows, from the low late sun.

This is another excellent shot. I can't think of anything I'd change here. The position and shape of the shadow is right on. It makes me wonder what the spike shapes are and between the strong shape of the shadow of the pillar and the more subtle shadows from - a tree? - it's very nice indeed.
