Standing Tall *

This tree has so much character! Its arms just seem to branch out everywhere. I have featured it before in another challenge, but this time I tried to capture its heighth by using the widest angle I have (18mm of my kit lens) close to the base looking up.

I really had problems recompressing this photo to meet the 150K limit. This is the first time that I had to use the low (4) setting. I do hope that it hasn't lost too much of the detail!!

Gayle, thank you so much for the input!! I will definitely try to take this picture again.

I was disappointed that it wasn't completely in focus, too. I was laying on the ground (long hair picking up all the grass clippings), but my head was also right at the base of the tree. I thought that the height would be accented because I was so close. I'll move away some & try again.

Thanks - Jeannie

OK...how to improve this shot. Get down lower (even if it means lying on your back) and get a little further away.
At f16, the whole shot SHOULD be in focus, but you were obviously very close to the tree and therefore the lower part of the trunk is just out of the focus plane.
By going lower and a few steps further back would get the whoe tree in focus and also give an even taller perspective. The 18mm end of the kit lens is awesome for this type of wide angle shot.
Hope this helps :-)

Jeannie, two days after I got my 300D, we went to a local national park. Lots of tall trees, very tempting...but how to shoot them? I tried all different ways but couldn't quite get them to look as tall as they were. So much to my husbands amusement, I laid on my back in amongst a whole lot of tree ferns and shot straight up. I got the shot and to this day it's still one of my favourites!
I like yours too, a handsome tree, loads of texture and a blue sky! What more could you ask for?
