Thank you Camerashy and pfehlauer. Actually, I was just using the word country in the generic sense, as in area. This particular range of mountains is called the Belts, and is in Montana. There was a fairly large fire here in 2000. --Melanie

I like this shot a lot, especially the way the shadows of the trees emphasize the curve of the hill. Nicely done.

Oh, I meant to add...my very first job with the fs was on an engine crew ('course, I was just a grunt). I did that for a couple of years many years ago, but I never really 'took' to fire. In fact, I tend to keep a low fire profile, except maybe for the occasional work on a BAER team. --Melanie

Wow, yep, small world :). On Sunday, 2 male black-back woodpeckers showed up at one of the points on the transect I was doing. It made my day, as I was beginning to think I wouldn't see anything on anyday :). The weather has been real iffy the past several weeks-- lots of rain and sometimes snow, and the protocol calls for doing it on days when there isn't any of that. So, this past weekend, since the weather looked ok, I decided to do some then. I had my camera with me, even though I wasn't actually expecting to take any pictures of birds, so only had my 50 mm lens with me (for pattern shots). (And actually my 70-200 would have been too heavy, what with all the other equipment I had to carry.) So I took pictures of those 2 guys-- but I had to crop heavily just to see what they were. Oh well. At least they are recognizable as black-back woodpeckers :). Of course yesterday, as I was walking out (the only level ground I walked on all day), I fell on my face so to speak, and on my camera case. (Normally it would have been a trip, a stumble, but the weight of the pack kept my forward momentum going :).) The camera seems okay though. --Melanie

I was an ADR in Resources (Lands/Rec/Minerals/HR/ etc etc) on the Lassen (last posting) but I quit in 2001 - too much work for responsible child rearing. My husband is an engine captain on the S-T. Small world :) Cindy find many woodpeckers????

Hi Cindy, actually I'm a Hydrologic Technician with the FS; but I often work in other areas too. This spring I'm helping the wildlife folks with woodpecker surveys. (My degree is actually in wildlife, but somehow I ended up in water :)). I know you're a forester, are you with the Shasta-Trinity or some other entity? --Melanie (mlynn)

Thank you all. Cindy, snow would certainly show off the contrast more; but if there was snow on the ground, I probably wouldn't be there. You can't see it in the photo as it's of a broad ridge, but this is very steep/shaley (is that a word?) country, and very difficult to walk in (and I think snow would probably make it that much worse :)). After 3 consecutive days, my knees aren't liking me too well right now :). --Melanie
