Red Balloons *

Chula Vista, CA

You and I in a little toy shop
buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got
Set them free at the break of dawn
'Til one by one, they were gone
Back at base, bugs in the software
Flash the message, "Something's out there"
Floating in the summer sky
99 red balloons go by.

You know, Earl, I just keep coming back to this one. To me, this one really set a standard for this challenge.

Love the composition Earl. Hate that song though ;)

Earl,

I really like this picture -- so uplifting, happy, & RED. Very simple, yet the layered transparency of the balloons adds a nice touch of complexity & range of reds.

Ok, I've given the sky an every so slight increase in blue. Better? -Earl Waud

The first time I looked at it I thought it was Ok but I have come back a few times and the only thing I would have liked to see was more blue in the sky.

Mr. Biscuit I'm glad it is growing on you. BTW, I also only know enough German to count and tell someone to hurry. Other than that "I know nothing...”. Thank you.

Angela, high praise coming from you. Thanks.

Alex, Thanks. I especially like the stripes too.

Markjay, the balloons where just transparent enough to let the low evening sun shine through, but not so much as to pale with the light. I think I was fortunate with the timing.

One of my friends said that the clouds almost look like a layer moving away giving the feeling that the balloons are above the layer of clouds. I hadn’t noticed it until he pointed it out, but now to me it feels that way too.

Thanks again for each of your comments.

Earl, this continues to grow on me. Also noted, this time around, the reference to one of my favorite songs, "99 Luftballoons". Though I learned all my German from "Hogan's Heroes" and can't read a word, I prefer the original version...

Hast Du etwas Zeit für mich
Dann singe ich ein Lied fuer Dich
Von 99 Luftballons
Auf ihrem Weg zum Horizont
Denkst Du vielleicht grad' an mich
Dann singe ich ein Lied fuer Dich
Von 99 Luftballons
Und dass sowas von sowas kommt

One of my favorites in the gallery right now. Crisp and simple. Beautiful side and backlighting.

I like this. The late-day side lighting, fairly strong contrast, and somewhat muted shade of red work well. Given its graphic nature, could use a tad more sharpening.
