Strawberry Braving The Milky Rapids*

Well, I still had the Strawberries and some 1% low fat milk in the fridge, so telling the story of the small, but brave, Strawberry running the extreme hazards of the dangerous Milk Rapids, seemed a natural to tell.

I am sure that Half & Half or some thicker milk might have worked better, but the entire series was wonderfully interesting with all kinds of different shapes and patterns and deep craters, but this image had some drama for me, and so this is the one posted.

I would add for anyone curious, this is the first time I've tried anything like this and, to encourage everyone, this is quite easy to do...albeit a bit messy...(Smile & Grin).

Thanks for all the kind comments, really, I do appreciate them...and yet I'm going to stand by this image as it is. For a couple of reasons...

I hate to bag on my own images but, the secret of this image is that it is a fairly radical crop...about 50%. When I realized this I was fairly discussed with myself. This can't be printed, at least not big, not without a lot of up-rezing.

So, on the one hand I am glad that the Challenge kicked me off my back-side and got me to produce this image, to learn the technique, but on the other hand, while I truly like this image and humbly seek your vote for it...I deeply recognize that this picture must be entirely re-done. There simply isn't any reason to work on it, and this may be a personal matter to myself, if you can't print it...and print it big.

But I like it for what it is...really. The image makes me happy, I love the swirling milk, the contrast of red and white...but I don't want to work on it any more...lol. I'm just being honest with all of you.

Real Best Wishes,

Traveller

Traveller,

I really like how you captured the motion of the milk!!

I have to agree that I find the green leaves in the background distracting though. Have you tried using the cloning tool to remove them? I don't think it would be too difficult to do, but would greatly improve the picture.

Nice job Traveller. I've thought about doing a splash image in this vein many times. Thanks for the encouragement and good example. -Earl Waud

Consider yourself strongly encouraged to participate in Challenge thread banter. This group has been far too quiet, far too serious, and I'm concerned [*sMiLe*]...

Dearest Mr. Biscuit:

Thanks for the analysis. I was following your banter over on the Official 40 thread and thought, Now that's one interesting guy! I really lilke your logo/follow on image at the end of your posts.

The above being said, I understand and accept your criticisms. More importantly I am happy someone finally commented on this image...that I rather like a lot. However, this was the pick of the litter. It is framed & cropped just about as well as it can be given the original image. (This was shot in a smallish ceral bowl, and all of that had to go before anything was possible).

Most of the rest of the series produced the standard cratered effect....pretty, but also maybe done to death. To get the swirling and wild white-water effect I eventually was looking for, it was necessary to toss more than one Strawberry in the milk...that is the greenish apperition you unfortunantly see in the background. I suppose I could clone it away...but the actual thought in my mind was and is that I simply need to do this again, but with a bigger bowl and a variety of milks of differing viscosities.

All of the above being said, I still like the image...as being a variation on a pretty standard theme. I love the motion in the foreground and the general energy of the image. I know that it is breaking the rule of thirds in the Strawberry being positioned as it is, the eye is drawn up too far and then has to scroll down, as it were.

But then, forcing the viewer to work a little also with a slightly askewed subject is not always a bad thing either. In the end, this image is what it is, and my only real complaint is...like yours, the, "green patch."

Seriously, I appreciated your thoughts on this.

I have one more image in my allotment to find before May 3...maybe we can do this again.

Best Wishes,

Traveller

Technically, well-executed, with crisp lines and smooth textures. But the composition seems off. Perhaps put the subject on the lower-left third, and eliminate the greenish background element. It doesn't contribute.
