So another lightbulb shot...I think I'm a little obsessed with light bulbs now...A slow progression to the final shot through a couple of iterations...

Oh...incase you didn't quite get all of them...the majority are:

US, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and perhaps some UK...

Thanks all for the comments...I like the suggestions...I will attempt sharpening and grabbing even more coins...I had a tough time with the focus on this...may need to go higher than f-9.0 just to sharpen....

As far as lighting this bulb....LOL! yes...I like to be tricky as far as the "wireless" lightbulb...so here's the trick....

1) cut a 1" diameter hole in some cardboard or whatever....

2) elevate the carboard enough to fit a flashlight beneath the board....

3) turn the flashlight on, put the bulb side down onto the hole (the light should hit the side of the bulb)...

4) Make sure it is a "soft light" light bulb...they have enough powder inside of them to difuse the flash light light in order to look like a weakly on light...

5) Take the shot with a long enough exposure to blow out the lightbulb region and allow the surroundings to be lit up...I had a 10 second exposure here...and an f stop of 9.0 ish...50mm lens....since the soft powder diffuses the flashlight light...the surroundings are lit by the light which seems to be the flashlight light...

Sorry if this is disappointing to you....I enjoy playing with photography to make it do what I want it to do....I learned after a while that you can capture the photo that's there....or you can create the photo that isn't there, but is in your mind....to me the challenge of making the photo thaat isn't there is much more fun....

That said, many of my shots are shots that are just there....or exist in natural positioning. It is only when I have the few minutes to play do I actually get out there and start being tricky....this is what happens when you grow up having had bad stage experiences with magicians and magic shows :)! Being up on stage with a magician who tricks you to to entertain others is a tough script :)!

Cheers,

Nice shot.
Just a suggestion if you allow me.
Will be nicer if the metal thread on the bulb wouldnt be out of focus and yes i would fill the background with more coins or bills.

David, I have question for you. How the hell did you power this bulb. I don't see any wires sticking out the bottom.

David, I really like this image. Now, to your questions (these are just my first impressions):
1 - Add some more coins of different country origin to cover the background.
2 - I like the current crop, I might even go wider to reduce emphasis on the light bulb.
3 - For this picture I'll go none.
4 - Definitely BW
5 - Dont know!!!

My other observations for what its worth (2cents!!!):
I would increase the sharpness/contrast so that I can cleary identify the coin.
Somehow eliminate the screw part of the bulb (maybe place the bulb in a corner and make the screw part go off frame).

My kids had a ball trying to identify the coins.

A few questions for specific critique (please leave other comments if so inclined) -- this is an image I'd like to work on some more...

1) Should I go and get more coins (than my current supply), so that the background is not showing?

2) a looser or tighter crop?

3) border? Black, white, none, ???

4) Does B+W work? I didn't like the color version...but do you feel loss of information?

5) Do you feel that there needs to be a further message? Perhaps one light on, and one off???

Cheers,
:-D
