Shankar's Double Violin*
by Michael Soo

Took this just 3 days ago. Didn't go into eligible cuz I'm 3 days late. :-(

Shankar & Gingger's famed double voilins (well, since there are two and they are both double, shouldn't they call it QUAD-violin? ) ;-) and vocals provided haunting melodies throughout the entire movie, "Passion of the Christ".

Here, Shankar started playing with his double violin. The backlighted stage poured rays of light illuminating the fresh rosin from its bow into the air, lasting mere seconds before it dissippated. At the same time, it silhouetted him into darkness, shrouding him with rims of bright light.

Hey, I just checked out the song (listened to it) in Amazon. I've actually heard it before. LOL!!! It's actually quite good. Maybe I should change the title to the name of that song!

Rob, the devil knew he was beat and Johnny got his gold fiddle in the end - doesn't sound likely does it? - Olaf.dk

I don't know how I missed this, it is stunning! I want to know how that song ends that Earl was going on about. Did the boy win.

MS Did you intend to get the rosin in focus? if you did is was an excellent call.

Thanks much, Mikel, Frank & Lonnit!
Angela, it was indeed a once in a moment capture. I only got one picture of its kind since movement and background stage fan blows the rosin away fast. So, were you a violinist too?

Olaf, LOL...seems like this image invoked the same tune even for different people. That's quite an astonishment to me since I've never heard of that song. Gotto look it up in Amazon.

Thanks again fellas.

The first thing that went through my head when I saw this was that song Earl was talking about! I didn't comment because I didn't know the name of the song nor the artist. I was hoping I'd find out once I get back to work and then I'd post. It is a truly amazing capture - fantastic image Michael! Earl, do you listen to Radio Paradise? That's what I usually have in my headphones at work. I think that is where I've heard that song. --Olaf.dk

I love it. Great lighting and motion you've captured with this one.

As a musician, I knew immediately what the "smoke"-like look was from: the rosin. This brings back a lot of memories of when I used to play more seriously.

Anyway -- about the photo. Just amazing. GREAT atmosphere and I love the rich, thick blacks you've got. Incredible timing on catching this moment.

My first thought when I saw the image was that is was smoke. ;)

Either way, it's a strong one.

Thanks Cindy, iso3200 and whoever the first guy who commented was... :)

Earl, thanks for the lyrics. I can TOTALLY understand why you would laugh. I would too if I were you. That's HILARIOUS!!! ROFL. Definitely more than a coincidence, I'd say! ;)

When I got my first look at this image, the song "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" by Charlie Daniels Band was playing on my computer via an internet radio station. A purely random bit of timing but when I made the connection I laughed out loud.

If you are not familiar with the song, it starts out like this:

“The devil went down to Georgia He was looking for a soul to steal He was in a bind cause he was way behind And he was willing to make a deal When he came across this young man Sawing on a fiddle and playing it hot And the devil jumped up on a hickory stump And said, "Boy" let me tell you what I guess you didn't know it But I'm a fiddle player too And if you'd care to take a dare I'll make a bet with you Now you played pretty good fiddle, boy But give the devil his due I bet a fiddle of gold against your soul Cause I think I'm better than you The boy said "My name's Johnny And it might be a sin But I'll take you bet, your gonna regret Cause I'm the best that's ever been"

I don’t know the musician in your photo but it sure looks like he is playing to beat the devil! Excellent image. This image reminds me that it is all about light. Just excellent. -Earl Waud

WOW!!! This is a great photo. It is such a "of the moment" photo, and I love these when they are well taken, which is what this one is.
