while hiking near the arenal volcano, i watched this leaf cutter ant excise a perfectly tiny slice of a tree, then carry to the tip of this leaf. eventually, she will return the leaf to the nest located up to 100 meters away, where it will be "fed" to a fungus that the ants eat. fascinating!
