Anyway, Olaf, I want you to know that I—for once—absolutely agree with Lonnit. I find your mania of playing with other photographers' pictures highly disturbing and—in my personal case—rather discouraging and demotivating. In addition, I did not like your version of this image any better than my original one (that may have, as Michael implies, its flaws as far as composition goes, but shows exactly «that dull grey day feeling» of Venice in November I wanted to capture, as you realized yourself). — db.

You are so right Lonnit - and thanks for the candor! I should have learned by now. I did regret it so much after I redid Joe's wrench shot and after that I decided to stop that practice, or at least use private email if possible. That was a while ago and I have fallen back into a bad habit. Lonnit, thanks for the wake-up call! I have removed the linked image. Sorry Daniel! I didn't mean to be offending anyone, but can easily see how my actions could be interpreted that way. --Olaf

Olaf, would you mind not embedding re-works into the threads? I think it detracts from the entry in addition to the fact that it doesn't give the photog the opportunity to make the changes himself. It's sort of like 'why bother, someone else already did it' and then if they do follow copy the changes it is no longer the photo's picture but instead a collaboration. IMO, it's better to offer the suggestions of what you might do to improve it and then let the original photog have the opportunity to interpret your suggestions and fly with it on his own, retaining complete authorship. If the photog is having a hard time understanding the suggestions then you might want to post a rework, but only do so as a link. TBH I find embedded reworks to be offensive, take away from the original, and can be misinterpreted to have a 'better than thou' attitude. I know you are just trying to help, but an embedded rework just takes the wind out of the photogs sails. For example, it's happened to me. When a comment was made on my sign challenge entry that there should have been buildings around, I was going to take my billboard and paste it into another shot. Pops was inspired by the comment and, all in fun, posted me in times square with the shot embedded right under mine. I thought it was very funny and laughed out loud, however I was also disappointed b/c I was going to do that exact thing. I had my own times square shot and I was going to clone my billboard in. I felt like why bother, b/c Pops beat me to it and all the originality of it was gone. It also made my shot, which had been well recieved, suddenly look very bland. It really wasn't fair b/c I didn't have the opportunity to rework my own shot. Of course I'm not angry at Pops, gotta love him! But I was disappointed. So please, in the future, make written suggestions. If the person interprets your suggestions a different way, or doesn't get it and wants help, or if they tried your idea and instead wanted to take a different route, or even if they just don't agree with you, it's fine to do a rework, just give them ample time to try to do it on their own, and never embed your version, only provide a link. You have lots of good input to offer - give people the opportunity to digest it and try to work with it.

While I realize that you may have been after that dull grey day feeling, I think that image would be improved by brightening up the buildings and increasing the contrast in the sky and water. It could look something like this:

The buildings, of course, Michael (and I think you will due to the warm colors of their facades'). But they need, IMHO, the «negative space» of sky and sea above and below that made me choose this picture for this challenge and give it the title. Thanks for commenting on all three pictures! — db.
