odd thing with this shot, it somehow works better for me in the thumb than at the larger size. i think some of that is the fact that the walker is pretty far gone focus-wise, and that gets minimized by the smaller size (mostly the background looks blurrier, not that the pedestrian gets sharper...), but i think there's more than that. somehow there's too much of the background for me to have it work in a pure graphic way, but not enough for it to work as a scene. does that make sense?

and no, don't really buy the polish industrial bit, though i do see where you're coming from.

Ok, I'll rip this one out too if I get to go shoot again for the challenge. :) ~ Lonnit

Hahaha. Naah, I'm at work and bored so was browsing the galleries and reading my email.
He does look lowly but he is TOO out of focus. And you're right...I'm not buying it! LOL!
I am finding the most difficult thing about street photography is the sheer speed required to GET THE SHOT! That's where the challenge lies.....I see lots of interesting shots, but too slow to catch them.
AV mode, f/8, wide angle lens works for me....but then we are in mid-summer with bright hard light most of the day so I don't have to shoot wide open.
We're gonna see better things from you before this challenge has closed. I just know it!

Geez woman... were you sitting there on pins and needles waiting it terror for my raging response? LOL!!! ;) I can't believe you got here so quickly!

It is hard to get things to 'work quite right' when you're shooting from the car and trying to capture things in the span of a glimpse. I was waiting at the traffic light and just hoping an interesting character would walk in front of the car in the crosswalk. This was the most interesting. LOL! Lot's of good shots do go by but there's no time to get the camera to your face, no less, aim, compose, focus, and click. :( Sometime perhaps I should try getting out of the car! LOL!

I thought maybe the lack of focus on him made him more lowly and unimportant. No? Not buying it? LOL! My seat doesn't adjust any lower either. ;) I promise I'll try to be more brilliant in the future. I'll see if I can get out with the new fisheye and catch something better. ;) ~ Lonnit

Actually, I just happened to post the comment on this shot because I was looking at it at the time. Yeah, this is your best one and I can see what you were trying to do....but to me it doesn't work quite right. I think it needs the man to have something in focus....anything...but right now there's nothing. And I also think that it could have been shot from lower down (but I also realise that's not always possible).
You are good at street photography. I expected to see some really brilliant stuff.
And I probably couldn't reach your butt to give it a good kicking anyway ;-)
Gayle
PS Congrats on your fisheye, go out and have a BALL!

LMAO! I'm not offended. Of the 3 I posted here, I happened to like this one the best. I didn't get much time to shoot in NYC the other day. We were losing light fast. I'd wanted to get in there earlier. I don't care much for the other two shots as they are rather dull. To be honest, I put them in the challenge only b/c I simply did not get any others. I figured I'd throw these in until I could do a reshoot. I'd also hoped my Sigma fisheye would have arrived in time and was disappointed I did not have it. It arrived today (YIPPEE!!!!).

This particular shot intrigued me because to me it felt like hard times in some other country; perhaps Poland or such, with the industrial steam, the ragged looking fur coat, and the downtrodden face. To me the other two shots are quite shallow. This is the only one I'm even half attempting to defend.

Now, dearie, don't you go kicking me in the butt b/c I simply do not have the time to go hosting another challenge right now! LMAO!!! ;)

But seriously, I do appreciate your sincerity and I would have less respect for you if you didn't say something if this is how you felt. It's just a darned shame you're wrong about this shot. ;) LOL! But tell me, do you sense any of what I said I felt in this shot or is it all only happening in my own head? You can still think it sucks, but does it suck in a poor-industrial-Polish way? LOL!

Gotta love you!

Lonnit, I'm gonna stick my neck out here and tell you to take to the streets and have another go at this. I know you're capable of better, I've seen some wonderful candids from you....these are not up to your usual standard though. Really sorry to be blunt, but I know you prefer honesty.
