Tim,
I agree with you completely. Shots by professionals are intentionally done this way. When we focus on someone's eyes, our peripheral vision naturally blurs the ears. I find this use of DOF extremely natural and appealing. Roberta

I may disagree with some here, but the soft nose doesn't bother me. In a portrait, the eyes should be the main focus, and in this shot they are. The eyes are sharply focused and that gives this image impact. Should we also be bothered by the ears being out of focus???... I don't think so. Wasn't the point of the challenge "wide aperture"? I felt that Peter just tried to work within the parameters set forth in the challenge, and I think this is a good effort. The actual aperture setting is not listed here, but I would be interested in knowing what it was. - Tim

Peter,
EXCELLENT!

Ahhhh, Peter, thanks for the explaination. Well, I'll tell you, with a little practice on getting the DOF to act precisely as you want it, I can see you'll be taking some quite excellent shots! I look forward to your progress. You've got what it takes; you just need to get a feel for the equipment. This is really quite a nice shot! Congrats. :) ~ Lonnit

Lonnit, the reason the nose isn't as sharp as the rest of the face is simple. I'm still lacking badly in my technic. End of story. No intentional, "artistic approach". Just poor skills. I'm still learning how to use the 135 f/2. Cheers.

Anna: thanks.

I KNOW the DOF is too shallow. What I don't know is WHY the shot was taken this way. I just didn't understand the point of it b/c I don't find it appealing. I can't figure the intention. Of course I understand the process. ;) BTW, I just ordered my Lensbaby today! So, for someone complaining about the focus here...LOL! ~ Lonnit

Lonnit the dof is so thin that the nose gets blurred when the eyes are in focus. Peter I like this portrait a lot but the file size is too large. Please remember the 150K limit. Thanks.

It's a wonderful shot and the texture of the face is excellent, but then we lose that texture in the nose. I don't care for that at all as there is no artistic explaination for it. I don't understand why one would intentionally blur a nose and no other part of the face. It makes the photo seem smeared. I'm sorry, but I had to say this. It's such a wonderful shot otherwise, I just wish the whole face was clear. ~ Lonnit

Good portrait, I like the sharpness and the tones in his face as well as the composition and crop, the blown parts of the shirt are maybe a small distraction.
