They're very popular in Canada, too. They taste a bit different from m&ms, although I'm not sure I can describe the difference. The aspect ratio is also a bit different: wider and flatter. -- Victor

Smarties are very much like M&Ms, they were launched in 1937 which makes them a few years older than M&Ms. They're sold in cardboard tubes with plastic lids. They're extremely popular in the UK. - Jon S
