Victor - what a simple technique! This is as level as it gets. I'm certainly not playing with it again. As Olaf says, the darker side is what creates the illusion I'm sure.

I just want to point out that especially now with all the comments, all that's needed to confirm the levelness of the picture is to scroll the browser window and look at the picture relative to the top of the window. As I'm writing this, I'm looking at the thumbnail, and the picture looks like it's going uphill to the right. When I first glanced at the full picture, it looked like it was leaning the other way. This is weird. -- Victor

Hmm, how odd, I agree Iso that it looks slightly downhill now (despite - and I'm not challenging you Olaf! - evidence to the contrary).
I'm not going to look anymore... :) Phil

Better! I checked this with guides in Photoshop again after your fix, putting a guide on all distinguishable lines, even the peaks of the "teeth". All the horizontals were absolutely horizontal! The left bar is absolutely vertical, the middle bar is very slightly tilted CCW and the right bar is a tilted an ounce more CCW. Why anyone would see this as sloping down, reading left to right, is odd, but maybe it could have something to with the right side of the photograph being slightly darker than the rest, both fence and background? --Olaf

I see what you mean, Iso. I think you've managed to capture an optic ilusion of some sorts. Well done! Oh... btw, I visited your website and really like how you have it set up... way cool! And the other version of this railing had red brick in it which I also found interesting. The funny part was I thought your had painted the yellow in. It's actually there in the original.. great eye!

OK - it depends just where you put the guides when you see how level it is. Here is the new version as per Olaf's instructions. To my eye, this looks as if it runs downhill now!

I'm pretty sure Iso will know that one, but still, I agree Olaf, before I even read the comments I thought it was just slightly off - funny how you can get that feeling.
I didn't actually try it though as I decided to believe Iso when he said it was straight... Phil

iso, I did exactly what you suggested Anders to try: I put it in Photoshop and used guides. My conclusion was that this is indeed tilted! I don't know if you already know this, but no matter, it is a helpful little tip for anyone reading this comment:

If you use the Measure Tool to draw a line along an element that is supposed to be either vertical or horizontal in a photograph, it will not only show the angle of the line, but also if you do "Image > Rotate Canvas > Arbitrary..." it will already show the angle needed to make the photograph level. This feature is especially great when scanning, but also in many other instances (tilted horizons anyone?)!

In this case, I used the Measure Tool along the edge of the (almost) horizontal bar, and it showed 0,15 degrees Clockwise when I did Rotate Image > Arbitrary... IMO, it did not look worse after the rotation - it was better - although the rightmost vertical bar was still a little bit tilted! --Olaf

I like it iso. Not sure about the white borders though.
Teapot.

Anders - put it in photoshop and use the guides. I know exactly what you mean but any rotation made it look worse!

iso,
I agree with you that it is spot on target. What could be more graphic than both the image and the purpose of this fence?

I don't know Iso... some may find this photo a bit too OFFENSIVE. But I like it. -Byron

This is fantastic, iso! Very bold in color and form.

Feels like it has a slight tilt, it's bothering me a bit as it's so geometrically perfect apart from that.

A bit offensive? Ouch! Sorry for the short comments but I am on my way to bed! --Olaf
