I actually quite enjoyed the stars and clouds. I think this one works much better than the previous one. Who cares if it's not a realistic globe... we get the Idea... It's not like you can afford to go out into space to take a shot of the real thing, right?

Jon, I like the dark background better and the colors of the globe seem to have more pop now, which is nice. I am unsure about whether or not I like the addition of clouds, atmosphere and stars - it is kind of neat, but tries to add a realism that is clearly not there, like you said yourself. Hopefully others will offer their opinion on those counts. I think my main point of critique had to do with the lighting - a little to flat. A more directional lighting (without going to the other extreme) would add some needed three-dimensionality to the globe and apple core. Maybe the lighting wouldn't even have to be more directional - just coming from a different direction, so that there would be some shading on the globe? I appreciate that it probably was a lot of work to merge the two shots, so I understand that you did not change the lighting, which would have required a re-shoot and doing it all over again... I am still very impressed with the photo - great idea and well executed! --Olaf

I decided to update this image taking some of your comments on board. I changed to a black background (with stars), added clouds and an atmosphere.

I'm going to work on this a bit more. To some extent this is a placeholder. Vikas, I know what you mean. I thought about that too, although that edge on the globe lines up exactly where the original edge of the apple was and there was no shadow there.

I went for diffuse lighting and a white background because I didn't want to try to make it look "real". Afterall, that's obviously a globe and not the real planet Earth! I kind of felt that it was better to steer clear of going for a more realistic look, which would probably not work out. I'll re-think this over the next few days.

Thanks for the comments people - Jon Stern

Good one! I thought of apple-core as well, but thought it too ordinary. You did something about that - great idea! Well, I guess for you the original idea was the core of the Earth and then the apple came into the picture, so to speak... I think I would prefer a black background on this and maybe a bit more directional lighting - up in space you know? --Olaf

Great idea, well executed. Only one suggestion, if I may, the globe layer needs some depth where it meets the apple layer, maybe a drop shadow effect to give it that 3D look?

Cheers. Vikas
