Patience *

If the Gull was luck, this was patience and determination. I lost count of the hours I spent waiting for one of the herons to do a fly past, and very nearly missed it as my wife called my mobile just at the wrong time!
Thankfully, this one flew round and round and round...

I think I suffered from the Joe Reilly syndrome here - after so much work you can lose sight of whether you're improving an image or not. Although the original (out of the camera) was reasonably sharp, in the pursuit for absolute sharpness I went too far, and even my wife said she thought the heron looked almost "superimposed" on a false background. As always, there's as much learning in PS as in taking the original image. Thanks all. Phil

Phil,
Yes, it's better IMO. The darker background creates more contrast and really makes the heron show up nicely. Roberta

Thanks all for the comments. I've uploaded a differently processed version, less agressive sharpening etc. Please let me know if you think this is better...
It can be compared to the original athttp://www.pbase.com/image/28014542
Thanks. Phil

Beautiful shot Phil. I guess I need to but a new lens to be able to take such pics, my longest zoom is the 28/135 as of the moment. Cheers.

Now this is just a perfect title for an excellent shot, wee bit too much on sharpening though. I can see you've cropped to get a close up. May be a selective sharpening to avoid the halo by the feather. - Karthik.

Phil,
Your patience paid off. I have yet to get a closeup shot of a heron. The herons around here are very shy and as soon as I get out of the car, they take off. I always see them in late afternoon when the light isn't bright enough for my 100-400. That must have been a thrill to see it glide past you! Roberta
