I'd have to agree completely with grant. ;) The hands of the child, (my son who is only 5 but reading at an age 8+ level!) who is a tiny guy reading big books, take on an essential role in this activity. It takes lots of physical strength and dexterity to handle this large book. There is a constant play of the hands, juggling to keep the book balanced and steady as he reads, and then there is the effort of turning the pages. Without hands reading would be quite a task for even an adult. I thought this hand conveyed the beauty of one of childhood's most incredible moments... an independent reader on a journey to discover the universe. And it all starts the moment he picks up a book with those tender little hands! :D ~ Lonnit

i disagree with jonathon. the hands are integral to this image because #1, they are holding the book; #2, the mismatch in scale between the small hands and the large book communicate that this is a new reader; #3, pleasurable reading (for me) happens with a book, not a computer. reading is a very sensual experience (smell of the ink, feel of the pages, the look of crisp type, the sound of turning a page...) i think that this image conveys a lot of that and i especially like the lighting from below that highlights the point where the hand is touching the book. and techincally it is well done. so there.

Sorry, this image doesn't work for me. I couldn't figure out why at first. It is because the hands are peripheral to reading. So, while they are important in the image composition, that clashes with the topic depicted. Had the hands been used to guide eyesight during reading, it would have not resulted in this conflict.

Now this is beautiful! I love the colours, the focus on his little hand, the sunbeam on his leg. It's warm, cosy and even without seeing his face, I know he is concentrating on reading those words.
You were right to leave this alone, it's excellent!

Thanks for your words of wisdom, Lonnit, because the image is soooo beautiful just the way it is! Shu

Thanks. After opening this in the RAW converter, I'm not sure that I tweaked anything, but, after opening several images and processing them, I got to this one on the desktop. As soon as I saw it I went to reach for the keyboard out of habbit and I caught myself midway. I stopped, smiled, and said, "No! This doesn't need anything.". I just saved it as is and uploaded it. That is such a rare thing for me! ~ Lonnit

Very nice, Lonnit. I like the composition, the softness of the exposure and title. Shu
