In an attempt at getting a sharper shot like this, I did a reshoot this weekend. I did manage to get a similar image as the original - and sharper - but unfortunately, I don't think the expression is as good as in the blurry, originally posted one. I've updated the image anyway. Here is the originally posted photo, for reference:

Oh, I almost forgot: in order get the exif-data for the new shot, I uploaded it as a new photo and then copied the comments over from the old one. This explains the dual dates on each comment. --Olaf

Andrew, thanks! I was way to close on this one, I am practically standing right next to the swing, almost within arms reach. This was not really a question of panning as much as following the pendulating motion - quite a challenge and I have a ton of (even more) failed shots from my attempts. I like the diagonal composition, the colors and the blur of this one, but the best feature, also reveals the main weakness of this shot: the face and the expression. Would have loved the whole face to be sharp instead of just the forehead and hair. BTW, left a comment on one of yours, before I saw your comment on this one. --Olaf

I think this image would have worked well if the motion blur was in one direction. From the picture, looks like you paned the camera well but also shook the camera. The motion blur on the pants is not parallel to the rest causing disruption in the flow. Hope this helped :) Please leave me a comment too :)
