Gayle - didn't mean to offend with the TMI comment - it's just that we (in the US) saw images of cooling towers exactly like this for weeks on end during that crisis, so even if these particular towers aren't used in a nuclear industry, it still holds a mental association for me, at least. (FWIW, I've seen towers like this used for other applications, so I know what you're talking about.) -Ed Hahn

Gayle, very striking image. I like the placement of the two stacks in the frame and relative to eachother. The blue sky really brings out the color in those beautiful bricks. -- Tabs

For the record, there are no nuclear power plants in Australia....we are one of the few Western nations who don't use nuclear energy.

These cooling towers are inextricably linked with Three Mile Island in my mind, but as forms, they are beautiful - such organic feel to the doubly-curved surface. -Ed Hahn

It's not a nuclear power plant, but yes you are right, they are cooling towers. The power is generated by brown coal.

Nice composition. These are not smoke stacks as the photo is entitled. They are cooling towers from a nuclear power plant. What appears as "smoke" is actually vaporized water that is generated during the cooling process.

I think the level of detail here (referred to by others) gives a real sense of size. Whether they are small or large bricks, they sure are large stacks. Phil

Nice image, Gayle. The colors are indeed very complimentary :) The pattern is quite subdued, but still there: if you look it is a 'brick by brick' thing... by the way, if these are bricks, they must be big ones! Cheers!!

Victor, yes I think they are bricks. It's not possible to get right up close to them because the power plant isn't open to the public but they are enormous, so easy to fill the frame from a distance. Just looking at this photo again, I managed not only complementary colours but also repeating patterns! Maybe I'm learning something from these challenges :-)

Maybe I can put in a comment before you remove this one (I hope you don't). What are those, bricks on the outside? Whatever they are, I like how you've brought out the color. It almost looks like it's glowing. This would have also been a good candidate for the complementary colors challenge. -- Victor
