Cores

Home

A section of (old) magnetic core memory. Each core is magnetized in one direction or the other to store ones and zeroes. The wires read and write each core by generating a stronger magnetic field at the intersections.
There's a damaged area to the right, and a single grain of table was added for scale.

Long time ago, I worked as a tool-maker for Big Blue. One of the projects was fabricating fixtures to align the cores so that the wires could be threaded through automatically during manufacture. Your excellent photo brings back those memories. (:=}> Arvin C.

This is a really interesting image! It shows how long we've come when you look at a CF card that holds 1GB of data! Nice image! - Ralph
