I meant to mention this, but I guess I left out a part. After depressing the shutter release, I had to quickly reach for the sheet of paper I used as a reflector to soften the light a bit. I simply held it on the other side of the subject from the main light. -- Victor

Here was my technique for achieving focus. I was holding the peppers with one hand (the orange one on a needle since its stem fell off when I bumped something). My hand was resting against the railing next to my staircase. With my eye removed (from the picture, not my head), I pressed the shutter release part way a few times to get good focus. Then I depressed the rest of the way. This locked the focus on the peppers, and since I had the camera on self timer, it also gave me time to position my eyeball where I wanted it. In an earlier attempt at this, my eyeball was present during the focusing part, and the camera decided it was more important than the peppers. I would normally agree, but for this shot, I wanted the peppers to get the primary focus. I then held my eye as close as possible to the peppers, making sure it was still in the light (don't you hate it when the photographer points those blazing lights at you and says not to squint?) and held my position until I saw the shutter. -- Victor
