Selfportrait In Black & White

Spring Arbor (Jackson) Michigan

Made as an example for those who feel 10D images are not sharp. Detail in the blacks will vary from monitor to monitor--has great detail on my LaCie monitor. Background in white muslin with a strip of black velvet over it, 3 ft. from white wall. Light reads f/11 on white wall.

Other than removing stray hairs and converting to b/w, no postprocessing took place...image is as it came off the sensor without adjustment via curves or levels.

Thanks for the comments. I took it expressly for this challenge. The background is white muslin (with a narrow strip of black velvet clipped over it) placed 3' in front of a white wall. There is a Novatron M300 monolight pointed at the white wall, which reads f/11 at ISO 100. This makes the highlight sensor flash on the LCD of the 10D. By having the white blown out, it eliminates the wrinkles in the cloth.

The main is an Ultra 800 in a photoflex medium soft box at about a 90 deree angle to me. The kicker is another ultra 800 in a small larson strip light. Both of these read f/8. There was no fill light or reflector used.

Great shot and great range of tones Steve. You should upload a bigger version, long side of 750 or 800 pixels.
What is your lighting setup?

Steve, excellent light control. Shades are nice throughout! Jim Fuglestad (shutter)
