I, too, think this is a great shot! But I have to agree with Olaf with regard to the subject matter. If this (as well as a number of the other submittals) is a "portrait", then just about any shot of a person (or persons) is eligible. Even by Joe Reilley's clarification for this challenge ... its a stretch.

Hi Olaf, thanks for your comments. It was me who left the "anonymous" note about the thread theme (I just forgot to put my name). Generally, going by the theme as stated by Joe, I don't think the submissions are being stretched far enough! :-) I like the crop on this one the way it is. :-) (I do, however, need to explore cropping options on my Dream State submission in the exhibition gallery).
Thanks for your critique! That's what the challenges should be about!

About the suggested crop: Or, as they are walking towards the camera, cropping off the top fifth might be better - still not sure. --Olaf

To the anonymous replier of my first comment: This is exactly where I felt it was stretching the theme:
"* The essential message is not about where they are or what they are doing, but WHO they are."
I really think this is a great shot, no doubt about that! I might have experimented with cropping off the lower fifth or fourth of the frame. It works very well as it is though, so I am not sure... --Olaf
Hi Olaf... hmmm... interesting comment, but I disagree. From the Challenge Thread:
CHALLENGE 7: Portraits
I suppose there is a formal photographic definition of portraits somewhere, but I haven't seen it and don't know if I would read it anyway. I would like folks to interpret liberally and creatively, with two general guidelines in mind...
* The primary subject is a person or group of people; and
* The essential message is not about where they are or what they are doing, but who they are.
Candids, informals, formals. Perhaps revealing street shots or (*egads*) snapshots. Black and white, monochrome, duotone, or full color. Don't get stuck on the standard head/shoulders portrait cliche, but define the box yourself and then think outside of it. Enough said.

Great shot! I do feel it is stretching the theme a bit though... --Olaf
