Blue Me
by j trujillo

I now have two flashes: a 550 and 420 - I'm having a lot of fun firing the 420 as a slave without firing the 550 master in ETTL mode. For this shot I made a "snoot" out of tinfoil to turn the 420 into a spot-light.

Canon EOS 10D ,Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
f8, 1/200s, ISO 100 420EF flash off camera full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

I like the tight crop and the lighting. The blue is a bit cold, but with that hard look it works well. andreas overland.

Strong image. Creative DIY on the lighting rig has produced pleasing results. Toning is always a matter of taste. A cold blue mood. Not the most friendly for a portrait but I think it suits your lighting style fine here.

J, the anonymous stranger was me:P What light setup did you have going on there?

It had more impact for me in the smaller size than the larger image, but a great job. Unless you've tried it, most people don't realize how difficult a self-portrait can be.

Thanks, anonymous stranger :)
There was very little (by my obsessive standards) post-processing on this one... B&W conversion... colorized with Hue/Sat... selective sharpenning.

J, I love this kind of lighting it sits very well with me, the blue tint also picks up the shot. For a self Port you have done very well, I don't think I could get the effect just yet, was there much post work?

Thanks Teapot and all.

Self portraits are now much easier for me than at the time of the first challenge a couple of months back thanks to the TC-80N3 remote. The hardest part of this set-up was getting my "snooted" 420ex to spot the light where I wanted it. The rest was just trial and error - don't you just love digital for that? :)

This is a great shot Julio. Lighting is excellent as the others have said. I like your expression as well, was that hard to get as you wanted considering it was a self portrait?

Great self portrait. The lighting is perfect. Well done!!!

Julio: Terrific self-portrait. The dramatic lighting, intimate composition, intense gaze, and blue cast give it power. Only constructive point: The hair (goatee, eyebrow, head) are so sharp as to draw attention away from the most important area, the eye. I would take the edge off these areas a bit. But, again, a terrific self-portrait. --Joe

Thanks and good point - I removed the catchlight from the left eye.

I love the lighting of this shot. I can't make up my mind if I like the tiny white square over the left eye or not.
