Thanks for the comments. I thought of the monochrome idea, and I think I tried it and didn't like it, but I didn't try altering the value. As far as crop goes, I went by instinct at first and just quickly grabbed a crop that appealed to me. Then I went back and tried all sorts of permutations, including making the picture closer in aspect ratio to 3:2 and also even longer. I also tried adjusting the amount of margin around the plant. In the end, what I settled on was very close to what I chose by instinct. What I didn't do was to reshoot the picture from a different perspective. I thought about it, but by the time I got around to it, autumn had set in for real (translation: the leaves blew off).

If the plant is to be centered relative to the frame -- have a consistent margin around it, except for the big space on the left, only a change in perspective would relocate the crack. A higher crack would necessitate an upside-down perspective. I don't think I'd like that. A lower crack would correspond to a lower viewing angle. It would also tend to make the crack start disappearing. And, of course, the perspective of the plant would change. --Victor

My kind of shot ( click ). Nothing at all to change in this image BUT if you want to play around with a second version, try selecting everything *except* the leaves, and make it darker/monochrome - this makes the leaves really pop.

Real good. Should be popular on voting day. Nothing else to add.

Assuming the frame size to be constant, I think I would prefer the crack to be a little lower in the frame, about one third up from the bottom. Likewise, I think I would've put the weed a tiny notch further to the left. Just me being as picky about it, as if it was my own shot. It's really is a nice image as is too! Seeing things, like this weed in the crack, is one of the great side-effects of being a "photographer". Well done! --Olaf

The tweaking is great!! The color was so vivid, I just had to know. I like it!!

Clarification: I did not adjust saturation -- only levels. The unadjusted picture is on my website at. When I first noticed the plant, it was illuminated by a low sun, which, of course enhanced the saturation. The picture I submitted is tweaked to approximate the way I saw the plant the first time. Of course the way you see something is not necessarily the way it is.

This is the color of the weed right now (this is Austin, Texas, so the leaves are mostly brightly colored right now). I've been paying attention to it each time I drive up to my house. When my car is parked, it sits right over the weed, so I had to move the car to get this picture.

I like this shot...very simple and works great (was the weed that color to start with?)!!!!

Awesome job..
