Sweet and Sour

Ashland, VA

I have found little time/inspiration for the current Challenge, but did find this in my stack
of shots from a recent Christmas party. Admittedly a little weak, but at least I am in...

Garrett, Victor: What fist? :-) Thanks for your suggestion. I liked the existing crop, so I did my best as a plastic surgeon to remove the distraction. --Joe

It is indeed ironic that your shooting preferences usually do not fit the challenges, but this photo certainly does. I like it, but I agree that you need to crop out the fist. It is much more distracting than the people in the background. --Garrett

Great picture, but I think you should crop out the fist at lower right. -- Victor

Mark, Olaf: Thanks for your generous comments. Mildly ironic, but my shooting preferences (people, candids, life in everyday motion) often don't square with Challenges. I always feel like I'm operating at the fringe when my approach is "OK, have I shot anything lately that fits?" I do like this photo, but more because of the folks in it (neighbors) and the moment it captured (a warm, fun, funny evening with friends). I didn't really think it would appeal to many, thus my disclaimer. Again, my thanks for your generous comments. --Joe

Joe, you are being too hard on yourself! This image is full of expression and human interest. Nice catch! --Olaf

Hi Joe,

I don't agree with you on this shot being weak. I think it fits this theme perfectly without being direct. I think the expressions convey the story completely. I don't know if you had them pose for this in terms of coaching but it has a very candid feel which I like. And your focus is spot on. I can count the hairs on his thining scalp. If one had to add anything and assuming you had any time to compose the shot, if you had swung a little around to your left/thier right, it looks like you might have been able to get the guy in the background out of the shot or burn him out all together in PS. Good pick for this challenge.
