8th place Gothic Frontier*

Pittsburgh, PA USA

The Cathedral of Learning rises in all it’s Gothic beauty above a small frontier cabin. The cabin is a historical landmark that dates back to the French & Indian Wars. I shot this the morning after seven inches of snow fell on Pittsburgh. I was walking around with eye out for things to shoot when I spotted this from down the block and thought it may work for this challenge. Right after taking this shot, a large ball of snow fell out of the trees and hit me on the head! LOL

The snow really adds to this shot. It's interesting to compare this to my "Suburban Shack", which was shot the same weekend. I converted it to black and white because the green grass was too distracting. --Garrett

Beautiful shot! The trees are magical! Wonderful job capturing the theme. ~ Lonnit

Thank you, this little cabin is almost hidden on the campus grounds that surround the Cathedral. I would not be surprised if many local people have never noticed it there under the trees.

Ron, I really like this shot! The contrast between the two buildings is so great, that it is hard to understand that this is not a composite shot! The snow and blue sky makes it fairy-tale like. I like the wide-angle perspective too - makes for an interesting composition. --Olaf.dk

The only post processing was a slight sharpening in Photoshop to the lightness layer. I convert to lab color, select that layer in the channel pallet and apply sharpness before converting back into RGB. I also adjust contrast and level a hair. The very last thing is a touch of neat image just for the heck of it.
