Wow Mark. This is wonderful. Like looking into the cap of an icy mountain in winter when it is about to blow up. Volcano coming, look out. :) Ann

I like tihs, Mark! I enjoy viewing the water bubbles having the appearance of movement and, I'm glad you chose this particular image which shows the candlelight refracted only through the center portion of the image, for contrast. Mark J

Mark, there is no need for you to post any more images on this theme. This one's awesome! --Garrett

Hi Rob,

Thank you, I like yours too. I like the double opposites definitely a nice touch. If I can venture a thought, I think that a little more power could be added with a little more verticle space, then drop a single small drop of water on the hot ring. Now the tricky part, capture that moment the drop burst into steam. Just a thought, but I can see it clearly. I will post this response on your image as well.

Thanks again.

Mark, this is an excellent image, the thought and time you took in getting this shot was well worth it. Funny how great minds think alike, just uploaded an entry then saw yours, I like yours better.

Hi Scott, Hi Olaf,

Thank you both for your kind words and comments. Scott, I knew someone would be working on this so I began freezing the ice block shortly after Denise announced the challenge. I think if the bubbles had not formed in the ice this shot would not have had the fireworks effect you are seeing. I can't say that I was going for a firework idea but I definitely see that. I was going for the burst of color that Angela mentions and I had to play with the angle to get that effect. I liked working with the ice because it has a life like quality to its structure. Spinning the block and shooting the flame from different angles resulting in many unique shots. I think one thing that could be done to increase the interest of the shot would be to change the face of the ice to create more refractive elements. I thought about heating up a chain then placing it on the ice to create some dents and ridges. Maybe next time. I tried having my son blow on the flame to give the image some kinetic quality but I found that the flame and the ice did a better job on their own.

Now I have to get working on my next two ideas for opposites.

PS: Olaf if you were here in Maine now you could be standing outside and I can tell you, you would definitely be cold. LOL

You are one dedicated challenge shooter! Great job and very interesting result! Kind of makes me feel like I'm standing outside in the freezing cold, looking in at a comfortable and warm place. --Olaf

Hi Angela,

It took three days to get the ice in the mold I used to freeze then I had to remove the plug in the center to create the cavity. Thank goodness the ice froze with all those bubbles in it. If it had been clear these shots would have been very boring. The ice itself is about 1 cubic foot. I took over 200 shots at different angles and exposures, some with additional lighting some with natural lighting, Yes there is some in the morning. LOL

Out of the 200 shots taken there are about 8 other shots that really convey both the power of flame and the strength of the ice. I would put up another one but I want to save my shots this time. I have a couple other ideas I want to see if I can work up. If I run out of time I might post another one of the Fire and Ice shots or place some in the exhbit gallery.

Thanks again.

This is *very* cool. I love how the fire looks like it's exploding due to the patterns in the ice. How big was the ice you were working with?? Again, very cool. -- angela :)
