Had the exact same idea as Olaf when I saw the picture. I kinda pictured someone sitting with their legs crossed looking away. Great scenery though!

Very dramatic, even with the shadow, but it looks a little over-sharpened to my eye.

Hmm.. I agree with the other comments as I don't like your shadow in the shot. However, if you did see the time and positioned yourself at the very TIP of the POLE shadow, it would have been quite interesting. You'd have the dock lines AND the shadow line pointing out the subjects.

I don't know if standing, sitting, walking away or towards the camera would be best but I have a feeling that bent over facing away from the camera a little in front of the end of the pole shadow would have turned this shot from good to great.

Thanks for the suggestions. I liked my shadow on the dock when I composed it but having a person at the end, maybe crouched, facing away might have had more impact. The weather's changed for the worse here so maybe next year.

I totally agree with Olaf. I would do the timer, run for 10 seconds, taking care not to fall in. I guess bringing someone to hit the button for you might be easier.

I think it's a great shot, but the shadow distracts me and I don't think it adds to the feeling of being alone. Having an actual person would be much more compelling to me.

What I think you should have done here: Should've used the self-timer and run into place at the end of the dock, sitting down with your back against the camera. You would be small in the frame but the perspective lines of the dock and the horizon would be leading right to you. That would have been a stronger statement of "Alone". I like the sky and and perfect reflection in the water. Also like the use of the wide angle. With the above suggestion, I think this could have been a very strong contender! – Olaf
